How this reaction time test works
The panel starts red. At a random moment between roughly one and four seconds it turns green, and the clock starts. It stops the instant you click, tap or press the space bar. The gap between those two moments, in milliseconds, is your reaction time for that round. We run five rounds and give you the average, because a single round tells you almost nothing: everybody produces the occasional outlier, and one lucky attempt is not a measurement.
The random delay is not decoration. If the green appeared after a fixed pause you would learn the rhythm within two attempts and start anticipating rather than reacting, which is a different skill entirely. Click before the green and the round is voided as a false start, the same principle that rules a sprinter out of a race.
What counts as a good reaction time
Most people land between 200 and 300 milliseconds on a simple visual click test. Here is a rough way to read your number:

The percentile we show you comes from a reference distribution assembled from published population figures, not from other visitors to this site. We would rather tell you that plainly than quietly imply we have a database of millions of results. Why your score moves around so much
Run this test five times in an evening and you will see averages 40 milliseconds apart. That is normal, and most of the variation is not about your reflexes at all.
Some of it is equipment. A 60 Hz monitor can only show you the green at 60 discrete moments per second, which adds up to 16 ms of pure display latency before your eyes are even involved. A 120 or 144 Hz screen halves that. Wireless peripherals add a couple of milliseconds, a heavily loaded browser adds a few more, and a phone screen adds touch sampling delay on top. Between 10 and 40 ms of any score is equipment rather than person.
The rest is state. Sleep debt is the single biggest lever, and it is measurable within a night. Caffeine reliably shaves a few milliseconds for most people. So does simply expecting the signal: attention wanders after a few rounds, and the round where you drifted is usually the round that ruined your average. This is why comparing your score today against your score last week, on the same machine, is worth far more than comparing it against a stranger on the internet.
Simple reaction time is not the whole story
What this page measures is simple reaction time: one signal, one response, nothing to decide. It is the cleanest thing to measure, which is why it is the standard test, but it is not what most real tasks demand. Driving, playing a shooter or returning a serve all involve choice reaction time, where you have to work out which of several things just happened before you can respond. Choice reaction is slower, typically by 100 ms or more, and it varies far more between people than simple reaction does.
That gap is why the rest of this site exists. The aim trainer adds a target you have to find and hit, which is closer to what a game asks of you. The F1 start lights test uses the real Formula 1 procedure, where five red lights go out at an unpredictable moment. The sound reaction test swaps sight for hearing, and most people are quicker to a tone than to a colour, because the auditory path to the brain is physically shorter.
Can you actually get faster
Partly. There is a hard floor set by biology: signal transmission along the optic nerve, the processing in visual cortex, the trip to motor cortex, and the muscle contraction itself. That chain costs somewhere near 150 ms and no amount of training removes it. What training does move is everything above that floor.
Most people improve noticeably in their first ten attempts at a test like this and then plateau. That early gain is real, but it is mostly learning the task, not rewiring your nervous system. Beyond that, the reliable levers are unglamorous: enough sleep, moderate caffeine, being warmed up rather than cold, and being genuinely focused rather than half watching something else. Regular exercise helps over months. Sitting closer to the screen helps a fraction of a millisecond and is not worth thinking about.
