The short answer is 250 to 280 milliseconds for a visual click. The longer answer is why that number moves depending on who is measuring and how.

The number, and what it is a number for

Across published work on simple visual reaction time, adult averages land between roughly 250 and 280 milliseconds when the response is a button or mouse click. That is the figure worth carrying around. Auditory reaction comes in faster, usually 20 to 40 ms quicker, and touch is faster still, which surprises people until you consider the distances involved: sound is converted to a nerve signal almost immediately, while vision requires several layers of processing in the retina before anything leaves the eye.

What that average describes is narrow: one signal, one response, no decision. It is called simple reaction time, and it is the cleanest thing to measure, which is why it became the standard. It is not what driving or playing a game demands, and the gap between the two is large enough to matter.

Why every site gives you a different average

If you have taken three reaction tests and been told three different things about what is normal, none of them were necessarily wrong. Three effects pull the numbers apart.

The first is measurement. A browser test counts from the moment the screen paints to the moment the click registers, and that window contains a 60 Hz monitor showing you the change up to 16 ms late, an operating system polling the mouse, and a browser that had other things to do. Laboratory setups with dedicated hardware strip most of that out and report faster numbers as a result. Between 10 and 40 ms of any online score is equipment rather than person.

The second is who is taking the test. The population of people who search for a reaction test and complete five rounds skews young, competitive and awake. That is a faster group than humanity, so a large site's median is lower than the true human average and is not the same statistic even though it looks like one.

The third is what counts as an attempt. Sites differ on whether a false start voids the round, whether they take your average or your best, and how many rounds they use. A best of five is always faster than a mean of five, by a margin that grows the more inconsistent you are.

Simple, choice, and why the difference is bigger than the average

Add a decision and everything changes. Choice reaction time, where you have to work out which of several things happened before responding, typically costs 100 ms or more on top of simple reaction, and it varies far more between people. Recognition reaction, where you respond to some signals and withhold on others, sits in between.

This matters because almost every real situation people care about is a choice task. Braking for a hazard is not one signal and one response, it is identifying what the thing in the road is first. Published figures for total driver response, from hazard appearing to brake pressure, generally run between 1.5 and 2.5 seconds, of which the pure reaction component is a small fraction. Most of it is perception and decision.

What moves your own average

Sleep is the largest lever and it works within one night. Caffeine reliably takes a few milliseconds off for most people. Being warm and already moving helps, which is why athletes warm up rather than arriving cold at the line. Alcohol slows reaction substantially and does so at doses well below obvious impairment.

Age matters too, and in both directions. Reaction time improves through childhood, peaks somewhere in the early to mid twenties, and then declines slowly and steadily. Measure yourself properly

One run tells you almost nothing. Everybody produces an outlier, and a single fast attempt is a coincidence rather than a measurement. Take the average of five, on the same machine, at a similar time of day, and compare it against your own previous scores rather than against a stranger with a 144 Hz monitor.

Because they are measuring different things. Roughly 100 to 120 milliseconds for a simple response, and that floor is set by physiology rather than by effort: the signal has to travel the nerve, cross synapses, and the muscle itself takes time to contract.
