Where the name comes from

In work at the Primate Research Institute at Kyoto University, young chimpanzees were trained on a task very close to this one: numerals appear on a screen, the ape touches the first, the rest mask over, and it has to complete the sequence from memory. Under short exposure times the young chimps performed better than the human adults tested against them.

That result is worth stating carefully, because it usually gets repeated as something much broader than it was. What it showed was an advantage on one rapid spatial recall task at brief exposure, in animals that had trained on it extensively, against humans who had not. It is not evidence that chimpanzees have better memories than people in general, and the researchers did not claim that. It is a genuinely striking finding about how quickly a layout can be taken in, and that is the interesting part.

The mistake almost everyone makes

The clock does not start until you click 1. Before that, the numbers sit there for as long as you want them to. That time is free, and hardly anybody uses it.

Watch yourself on the next attempt. The instinct is to click 1 the moment you spot it, which means you have located exactly one number and are now hunting for the other eleven behind blank tiles. The people who score well do the opposite: they find 1, then deliberately do not click it, and instead trace the route from 1 to 2 to 3 across the grid until the path feels like a shape rather than a list of positions. Then they start.

That is the same chunking effect that runs through every test on this site. You are not holding twelve coordinates. You are holding a line that happens to pass through twelve places, and a line is one thing.

Why this is harder than the other memory tests

It combines two demands that the other tests separate. Visual memory asks only which squares, never in what order. Sequence memory asks only for the order, and the tiles stay in the same nine places every time. The chimp test asks for both at once, on a board where the numbers land somewhere different on every level.

Three strikes rather than one, because with that much going on a single misclick ending a good run says more about your mouse than about your memory. If you want the pure verbal version of the same span idea, number memory is the cleanest test of it.

Does practice help

Yes, and quickly, for the first ten or so attempts. Almost all of that early gain is learning to use the free look before the first click, plus learning to see paths instead of points. After that most people plateau, which is the same pattern the research on working memory training keeps finding: you get better at the trained task, and the improvement transfers to other tasks far less than anyone would like.

What is a good chimp test score?
Most people fail somewhere between 8 and 12 numbers. Reaching 15 is strong and past 18 is unusual. The test starts at four numbers and adds one each level, and you get three strikes.
How does the chimp test work?

Because rushing the encoding phase is the main way people fail this test. The clock does not start until you click 1, so the time you spend looking at the layout before that first click is free. Most people click 1 far too quickly and then discover they never actually looked at where 7 was.
Is this the same as the visual memory test?
No. Visual memory asks you to remember which squares lit up, with no order involved. The chimp test asks for position and order at the same time, which is why almost everybody scores lower here than on the visual memory test.
