Reaction Time for Gaming
What your reaction number means in a tactical shooter, how it compares to professional players, and why it is not the thing costing you duels.
Measure it first
Take the reaction time test for your baseline, then the aim trainer, which is much closer to what a shooter actually asks of you: find a target somewhere on screen, move to it, and click accurately. Pure reaction is one signal and one response with nothing to decide. Almost nothing in a game is that.
Most competent players land between 180 and 250 ms on the click test. Figures reported for professionals in tactical shooters generally sit around 150 to 200 ms. That is a real difference and it is also a much smaller one than the gap in results would suggest, which is the first thing worth understanding.
Why reaction time is not what separates you from a professional
Reaction only begins to count once the enemy is already rendered on your screen. Everything that decided the fight happened earlier: who chose to take that angle, who had utility, who knew the timing, and where each crosshair was already pointing.
Watch a professional and the striking thing is not speed of response, it is that they were already aiming at the place the enemy appeared. A player whose crosshair is at head height on the correct angle needs a small movement and a click. A player whose crosshair is at the floor needs to find the target, travel a long distance and then correct. The second player can have a faster nervous system and still lose every time, because they are doing more work.
That is why coaching time goes to crosshair placement, pre-aiming common angles and map timings rather than to reflex drills. Those things change the size of the task. Reaction time only changes how fast you perform whatever task you left yourself.
Peeker's advantage, and why it is not about reflexes
If you hold an angle and lose to someone swinging it, that is often not your reaction failing. The player moving around the corner sees the stationary player slightly before the stationary player sees them, because both clients have to exchange positions over the network and the mover already knows the fight is starting.
The mover is executing a plan. The holder is responding to new information. Those are a choice task and a reaction task respectively, and choice tasks cost 100 ms or more on top of simple reaction. Add network latency on top and the gap gets wider. No amount of reaction training closes it, which is why the practical answers are positional: hold from further back so the angle opens slowly, or take the fight rather than receive it.
Simple, choice, and what a shooter really demands
A game asks for choice reaction almost exclusively. Something appears and before you can shoot you have to establish whether it is an enemy, whether it is the enemy you expected, and whether shooting is the right move given where their teammates are. Each of those decisions costs time, and the cost varies far more between people than simple reaction does.
Which is genuinely encouraging, because the decision component is trainable in a way that nerve conduction is not. Experienced players are not deciding faster in some abstract sense. They have seen the situation enough times that it no longer requires a decision. That is pattern recognition, and it is the same mechanism behind chunking on the visual memory test.
The milliseconds worth buying
Some of your measured reaction is equipment, and unlike your nervous system it responds immediately to money.

Together that is often 15 to 25 ms, which is more than most people will ever gain from training. It is also why comparing your score against a stranger's is close to meaningless unless you know what they were playing on.
What actually improves, and what does not
Sleep moves reaction time more than any drill, and it moves it within one night. Caffeine helps modestly and reliably. Being warmed up matters, which is why a few minutes in a range or on the aim trainer before a competitive session is worth the time.
What does not work is grinding a reaction test expecting the number to keep falling. It improves for the first handful of attempts, which is you learning the task, and then it stops.
