F1 Reaction Test

    The start procedure, as it actually happens

    A Formula 1 start is not a green light. Five pairs of red lights illuminate from left to right, one every second, until all five are showing. Then comes the part that decides races: an unpredictable hold of somewhere between roughly two tenths of a second and three seconds, after which all five extinguish at once. Lights out is the signal. This test reproduces that sequence, including the random hold, so what you are practising is the real thing rather than a green rectangle.

    Drivers describe the hold as the hardest part of the weekend. You are stationary, the clutch is biting, and the one thing you must not do is move. Go early and the grid transponder catches you, which is a five second penalty at best.

    What the numbers look like at the top

    A Formula 1 reaction time is measured from lights out to the car moving, not to a button press, so it bundles human reaction together with clutch release and the car actually responding. Published figures generally fall between 0.2 and 0.4 seconds, with the very best starts around 0.15 s. Anything under 0.1 s is automatically investigated, because it is faster than human reaction can be and therefore indicates anticipation.

    Your score on this page will be a little quicker than a real launch, because a mouse click has nothing mechanical to move.     Why most people are slower here

    Two things work against you. Detecting that something has switched off is marginally slower than detecting that something has switched on, a small but consistent effect. And the five second build up loads you with anticipation, which pushes people into guessing. A jump start on this page is almost always the second problem rather than the first.

    The technique that helps is the one drivers describe: stop trying to predict the hold, and instead hold a steady gaze on the lights and let the change trigger you. Trying to time it is what produces both the jump starts and, oddly, the slowest legitimate scores, because a failed prediction costs you the moment you spend realising you were wrong.

    Sound rather than sight

    Motorsport is unusual in using a purely visual start signal. Most sprint disciplines use a gun, and for good reason: auditory reaction is quicker than visual reaction by roughly 20 to 40 milliseconds, because the path from ear to motor cortex is physically shorter than the path from retina.     So nobody can time it. If the gap were fixed, drivers would learn the rhythm and launch on a count rather than on the signal, which would turn the start into a lottery of who guessed best. The FIA randomises the hold for exactly that reason, and so does this test.
    Is reacting to lights going out harder than lights coming on?
    Slightly, for most people. Detecting the onset of a bright stimulus is marginally quicker than detecting its absence, and the F1 procedure also loads you with five seconds of building tension first. Expect your F1 score to be a little slower than your score on the standard green light test.
