What this aim trainer measures
Every target appears in a random position and the clock runs continuously from the first target to the last. Your score is the mean time per target across all thirty, which bundles three things: noticing the target appeared, moving the pointer to it, and stopping accurately enough to hit it. That combination is much closer to what a game actually asks of you than a pure reaction time test, where there is nothing to aim at.
Missed clicks are counted. Accuracy appears alongside your average, and because the timer never pauses, a miss costs you real milliseconds as well. An aim test that ignored misses would reward clicking as fast as possible in roughly the right area, which is the opposite of aiming.
Why pointing is slower than reacting
Most people are startled by the gap between their reaction time, often around 250 ms, and their aim score, often three times that. The explanation is a piece of human factors research from 1954 known as Fitts's law: the time to move to a target grows with how far away it is and shrinks with how large it is. Moving a cursor is not one motion but a fast ballistic throw followed by one or more small corrections, and the corrections are where the time goes.
This is also why bigger targets feel disproportionately easier, and why the same player can be excellent at flicking to large close targets and poor at small distant ones. They are different points on the same curve, not different talents.
Getting a fair score
- Use a mouse rather than a trackpad if you have one. The difference is usually 100 ms or more per target.
- Keep your sensitivity where you normally have it. Aim is a learned motor pattern and changing sensitivity resets part of it.
- A higher refresh rate screen genuinely helps here, more than it does on a plain reaction test, because you are tracking a moving pointer rather than waiting for one event.
- Sit properly and use your arm, not just your wrist, for the long moves.
What actually improves
The honest answer is that the first week of any aim training produces a large improvement and most of it is task learning rather than better aim. After that, gains are slow and specific. Overshooting less is trainable. Reaction time underneath it is largely not, beyond the state factors covered on the average reaction time page.
If you want to separate the two halves of your score, take the plain reaction time test and subtract it from your aim average. What is left is roughly your pointing cost, and that is the part practice moves.
