What words per minute actually means
A word, for the purposes of every typing test worth comparing against, is five characters. Not an actual word. The convention exists because real words vary wildly in length, and a test that counted them would give you a better score for typing a paragraph of short words than a paragraph of long ones. Five characters including the space is the standard, it has been the standard for decades, and this test uses it.
The other half of the definition is the word net. Gross WPM counts everything you typed. Net WPM counts only what you typed correctly. This test reports net, which is the number that means something: typing 90 characters of nonsense in a minute is not typing.
How to read your score

Read the accuracy figure next to it before you decide how you did. Two people can both post 70 WPM and be nowhere near equivalent: one at 98 percent is producing usable text, and one at 88 percent is producing text that will cost more time to fix than the speed saved.
Speed comes from accuracy, not the other way round
This is the least intuitive thing about typing and the most reliably true. People who try to get faster by typing faster mostly get less accurate, and because errors cost both the wrong character and the backspace to remove it, their net score often falls.
The approach that works is dull. Type at the speed where you make almost no mistakes, even if that feels slow, and hold it there. Speed arrives on its own as the movements stop needing conscious attention, which is the same plateau and breakthrough pattern that shows up on the aim trainer: precision first, pace second.
If you never learned to touch type, that is the one change worth making before any practice at all. Fingers resting on the home row, both hands, eyes on the screen rather than the keyboard. You will be genuinely slower for a week or two and then permanently faster, because hunting for keys puts a hard ceiling on you somewhere around 50 WPM that no amount of practice lifts.
Why typing speed is not reaction speed
They feel related and they are almost unrelated. A reaction time test measures one signal and one response, with the whole result decided in a quarter of a second. Typing is a continuous motor skill: sequences of movements chained together and largely automated, where the fast typist is not reacting to each letter at all but executing a pattern learned long ago.
That is why reaction time barely improves with practice while typing speed improves enormously, and why a fast typist is not necessarily quick on the click speed test either. Different systems, different limits.
Getting a fair reading
Use the 60 second run for your real score. The 15 second option is fun and it flatters everybody, because you can sprint for fifteen seconds in a way you cannot sustain for a minute. The 120 second run is the honest one if you want to know what you can actually hold, and most people are five to ten WPM slower on it than on the minute.
