What serial order memory is

Holding a set of things is one problem. Holding them in the right order is a harder and partly separate one. This test isolates the second problem: the tiles themselves are never in doubt, there are only nine of them and they are all visible the whole time. The only thing you can get wrong is the sequence.

That distinction is not a technicality. People with a strong memory for position can be merely average at order, and the reverse happens too. If you scored well on the visual memory test and find yourself stuck at level seven here, that gap is the effect, not a bad run.

The thing that actually raises your score

Give the tiles names. Top left, middle, bottom right. Or number them one to nine like a phone keypad, which most people find easier because the layout is already familiar. The moment the sequence becomes a string of words or digits rather than a string of positions, you can rehearse it in your head the way you rehearse a phone number, and the verbal rehearsal loop is far better practised than any spatial equivalent.

This is the single largest jump most people find on this test, and it is worth being honest about what it means: you have not improved your memory, you have converted a spatial task into a verbal one that your brain was already good at. That is a legitimate strategy, and it is also why comparing your practised score against somebody's first attempt is not comparing the same thing.

The second technique is chunking, the same one that helps everywhere else. Four, seven, two becomes one chunk of three rather than three separate facts. Past about level ten, everybody who is still going is chunking whether they have noticed it or not.

Why one mistake ends the run

It is the standard rule for span tasks and it exists so scores mean the same thing between people. A test that let you continue after an error would be measuring something fuzzier, because a run of fifteen with four mistakes is not a span of fifteen. The visual memory test does give you three lives, but for a different reason: there the failure mode is a slipped mouse click on a large grid, which is noise rather than memory.

Where this sits among the others

Number memory is the verbal version of the same span idea and most people score higher on it for the reasons above. The chimp test takes position and order together and adds time pressure, which is why it feels much harder than either. If you want speed rather than memory, start with the reaction time test.

What is a good sequence memory score?
Most people reach a sequence of 7 to 9 tiles. Getting past 12 is strong and past 15 is rare. The published figure people usually quote for this kind of span is around seven items, which matches what the test produces.
How does the sequence memory test work?
Tiles light up one after another in an order. You repeat that order by clicking them. Each level adds one more tile to the end, and the whole sequence is replayed from the beginning every time rather than only the new tile. One mistake ends the run.
Why does it replay the whole sequence each level?
Because replaying only the new tile would turn it into a reaction test. You would simply watch the one new flash and click it, never having to hold the earlier order in mind at all. Replaying from the start is what makes it a memory test.
Is this the same as the Simon game?
It is the same task. The electronic Simon toy from 1978 used four coloured pads and sounds, and the underlying test of serial order memory is much older than the toy. This version uses a nine tile grid, which makes the later levels genuinely harder because there are more places for a tile to be.
Why am I better at number memory than at this?
They use different systems. Digits are verbal and you can rehearse them as sound in your head, which is a powerful and well practised loop. Tile positions in order have no natural verbal form unless you invent one, so most people score lower here. Inventing names for the tiles is the single biggest improvement most people find.
