Reaction Time by Age
Reaction speed climbs through childhood, peaks in the early twenties, then declines slowly. The decline is smaller than most people expect, and the variability tells you more than the average.
The shape of the curve
Reaction time across a lifetime is not a straight line in either direction. It improves steeply through childhood, flattens into a broad peak somewhere between about 20 and 25, and then rises again gradually for the rest of life. Drawn out, it looks like a shallow valley with a long, gentle climb out the far side.
The interesting part is how gentle that climb is. Popular framing treats reaction time as something you lose, and the measured effect on a simple visual test across the whole adult span is usually tens of milliseconds, not a doubling. Plenty of people in their fifties post scores that would be respectable for a twenty year old, and the reason is that the age effect is small enough for fitness, sleep and practice to swamp it.
Typical ranges by age
These are indicative ranges for a simple visual click test, the kind on our reaction time test page. Treat them as rough context rather than a diagnosis. Individual variation inside any of these bands is far larger than the difference between the bands.

One caveat that applies to every row: these include the 10 to 40 ms of equipment overhead that any browser test carries. A phone, a 60 Hz laptop screen and a wireless mouse all add real milliseconds before your nervous system is involved at all.
Why children are slower
Two things are still being built. The first is myelination, the fatty insulation around nerve fibres that lets a signal travel fast. It continues developing through childhood and well into adolescence, and until it is finished the raw transmission speed is simply lower.
The second is attention. The brain regions that hold focus on a boring task, waiting for a panel to change colour, are among the last to mature. That shows up less as a slower best attempt and more as a wider spread: a nine year old will produce the occasional adult grade reaction and then a 600 ms one because they looked away. Since most tests report an average, the inconsistency costs more than the speed does.
Why the decline after the peak is mostly not what people think
The measured slowing in older adults is real, but the dominant change is in variability rather than in the floor. Fast attempts stay surprisingly fast. What increases is the number of slow ones, which pulls the average up. Researchers have made a good deal of this distinction, because a mechanism that occasionally drops a response is a different thing from a nervous system that has uniformly slowed down.
Several things that correlate with age are not age. Cardiovascular fitness is associated with faster reaction at every stage of adulthood. Sleep quality tends to decline with age and hits reaction time hard. Common medications, particularly anything sedating, can cost more milliseconds than a decade does. Uncorrected vision slows the first link in the chain before any of the rest happens. If your score has changed and you want to know why, those are worth checking before the calendar.
What this does not tell you
A single reaction time is not a measure of cognitive health, and it should not be read as one. It moves with tiredness, caffeine, motivation, screen refresh rate and how many browser tabs are open. A number that is 40 ms slower than last month is well inside normal day to day variation for the same person.
What is genuinely informative is a trend, measured the same way on the same equipment over time. That is the reason this site stores your personal best on your own device rather than trying to rank you against strangers whose hardware you know nothing about.
Comparing fairly across ages
If you are testing a child against an adult, or a grandparent against a grandchild, use the same device and give everyone a few practice rounds first. Almost everybody improves markedly over their first ten attempts purely from learning the task, so an unfamiliar player is handicapped by the format rather than by their reflexes.
